Restaurant interior design in Bangkok is at its best when the materials are chosen for what they become, not for how new they look on opening day. UNFORMALDESIGN, the Bangkok-based interior design studio led by Italian architect Alessio Carta, works with distressed plaster, reclaimed brick, old timber and exposed concrete on food and beverage projects across Thailand. Nothing is dressed up to look expensive: each material is chosen because it gives the room its character. This article looks at what each material does in a restaurant and at three projects where the studio applied them.
Why restaurants suit materials that age
A restaurant is used every day, by many people, in warm and humid conditions, so a pristine finish is difficult to keep. A finish that is meant to wear, with plaster that shows its hand, brick that shows its age and timber that has already been used once, does not lose value as it is used. It gains a history. This is why the studio treats wear as a design decision and not as a maintenance problem.
Four materials, four jobs
Distressed plaster softens light and gives walls depth. Uneven texture catches warm lamps in the evening, which suits dining rooms used mostly after dark.
Reclaimed brick adds warmth and scale. Old brick already carries colour variation and marks that a new brick has to be manufactured to imitate.
Reclaimed timber carries the room at eye level: tables, panels, cladding. Wood that is older than the building brings a grain and tone that new timber does not have.
Exposed concrete works as structure and as surface at once. Left honest, it gives a dark, quiet background for the warmer materials.
Three projects
Ailati, Bangkok. Distressed plaster and reclaimed brick inside a century-old shophouse. The building already carried the age, and the design leaves it visible.
Warehouse, Wine and Dine, Phuket. Reclaimed timber and exposed concrete under an industrial ceiling: honest materials doing the talking.
Ombra Modern Tavern, Bangkok. Here the character comes from craft and narrative: a hand-painted mural of Venetian carnival masks along the dining room wall, in a tavern built to feel older than it is.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is restaurant interior design? The design of a dining space, including layout, lighting, materials and furniture, so that it works for service and guests.
Why use reclaimed materials in a restaurant? They already carry age, colour variation and texture, and they wear well under daily use. That gives a room character without a heavy decorative layer.
Does UNFORMALDESIGN design restaurants in Thailand? Yes. The studio designs restaurants, bars and cafés in Bangkok and on Phuket, and handles design through construction follow-up. Contact alessio@unformaldesign.com.
Where can I see the projects? Project galleries are on unformaldesign.com/projects.
The takeaway
For restaurant interior design in Bangkok and across Thailand, materials that age on purpose give a room character that lasts. Plaster, brick, reclaimed timber and concrete do the work. See the projects at unformaldesign.com/projects.
