Tropical Social Hub Interior Design in Ao Nang, Krabi: SATI’s Three Zones

SATI Ao Nang is a tropical social hub in three zones — lounge, communal table, social bar. Here is how UNFORMALDESIGN designed for Krabi's climate and pace.
Tropical Social Hub Interior Design in Ao Nang, Krabi: SATI's Three Zones

A tropical social hub is a hospitality space designed to hold several kinds of gathering — lounging, communal dining, and bar socialising — inside one shared material language rather than as separate rooms. SATI Ao Nang, currently under construction in Krabi, is UNFORMALDESIGN’s answer to that brief: a Tropical Lounge, a Communal Table, and a Social Bar, unified by soft mineral pink plaster, ivory terrazzo, warm oak, and real greenery. UNFORMALDESIGN is a Bangkok-based interior design studio led by Italian architect Alessio Carta, working across Thailand’s hospitality and F&B sector.

This is a live case study — SATI Ao Nang is still on site, not yet open — which means the material choices below are decisions being tested against a real build, not a finished-project retelling.

What makes a space work as a “social hub” rather than three separate rooms?

A social hub reads as one place, not three, when every zone shares the same material palette and the same design intention — even though the activity in each zone is different. SATI Ao Nang uses one language across all three: soft mineral pink plaster on the walls, ivory terrazzo underfoot, warm oak for surfaces and seating, and real greenery throughout. A guest can move from a lounge seat to the communal table to the bar without the space resetting visually.

The alternative — three zones each with their own finish palette — is how many multi-use hospitality venues end up feeling like three separate businesses sharing a lease. Continuity of material is what keeps SATI Ao Nang reading as one hub.

The three zones, and what each one is built to do

Zone Function Design driver
Tropical Lounge Relaxed arrival, low-key seating Lush, soft, greenery-forward
Communal Table Shared meals, easy conversation Warm oak, one long shared surface
Social Bar Visible kitchen, active socialising Kitchen on display, more energy

The Social Bar puts the kitchen in view on purpose — mindful eating is easier to feel when guests can see the food being made, not just served. That’s a direct design response to the brief: a hub built around mindful eating, easy conversation, and everyday wellbeing, not a conventional restaurant floor plan.

Designing for Krabi’s climate and pace, not importing a Bangkok concept

Ao Nang runs slower than Bangkok, and a material palette that works on a busy Bangkok street doesn’t automatically read right against Krabi’s tropical, beach-town rhythm. Soft mineral pink plaster and ivory terrazzo were chosen to feel calm and sun-washed rather than urban — colours and textures that carry the relaxed spirit of Ao Nang from the drawing onto the actual site, not just on a moodboard.

Real greenery does two jobs here: it softens the industrial bones of any commercial fit-out, and it ties the interior visually to Krabi’s landscape outside the door. UNFORMALDESIGN uses the same biophilic, material-first logic — texture, living material, honest finishes — across projects; see the full approach on the Material System page.

How SATI Ao Nang differs from SATI in Bangkok

UNFORMALDESIGN has also designed a SATI in Bangkok — a 15-square-metre precision build focused on light and compact-space discipline. SATI Ao Nang is a different project on a different island province: larger in footprint, tropical rather than urban, and organised around three distinct social zones instead of one compact room. Same studio, same name, deliberately different brief.
