Radisson RED Phuket Patong Beach: Lifestyle Interior Design on the Rooftop

A lot of rooftops are designed to photograph well from a drone and disappoint as soon as people actually start using them.

They look open, but they do not hold people. They offer views, but not much social logic. They feel like amenities instead of destinations.

This rooftop works because it is designed to be experienced from the inside, not only admired from above.

UNFORMALDESIGN approached the space as lifestyle interior design on the rooftop, where the pool becomes the centre of gravity. Around that reflective core, seating, shade, artwork, and lighting are arranged to create different levels of intensity, from highly social to quietly intimate.

The result is not just a terrace with a pool. It is a social landscape. Water amplifies movement and light, low seating softens the perimeter, and shaded structures help the rooftop avoid that common feeling of being too exposed to stay in for long.

Why the rooftop works

The strongest idea is that the design never treats the whole surface as one undifferentiated party deck.

Instead, it creates a hierarchy:

\- the pool holds the visual energy;

\- the surrounding zones offer softer pockets to sit, observe, and stay longer;

\- the artwork gives the rooftop a clear identity anchor;

\- the lighting ties the whole thing together once daylight drops.

That balance matters because hospitality rooftops often fail by chasing spectacle only. Spectacle brings people up once. Comfort and atmosphere make them stay.

What the design is really doing

  1. Turning reflection into a design tool rather than a by-product of having water.
  2. Giving the rooftop multiple social speeds instead of one generic mood.
  3. Using artwork as a spatial anchor, not just decoration.
  4. Letting light control behaviour at night, shaping where people gather and where they slow down.

That is what makes the rooftop feel composed rather than accidental.

What operators should ask

\- where is the strongest energy point on the rooftop?

\- what zones are meant for staying longer, not just passing through?

\- how does the space behave differently in afternoon sun versus night light?

\- what is the one element people remember when they leave?

If those answers are missing, the rooftop is usually just expensive open space.
