Brick usually enters a room with a very clear identity.
It is heavy, grounded, solid, honest. That can be beautiful, but it can also become predictable if the material is only treated as a wall.
The porous brick system starts from a different question: what happens when brick stops acting like a block of mass and starts behaving like a filter?
UNFORMALDESIGN explores that shift by offsetting and recessing standard clay brick inside a simple module. The result moves from compact to perforated, letting void become just as important as matter.

In experiential interior design, that shift matters because once the surface opens up, light begins to participate. By day, natural light drifts through the openings. At night, concealed warm light can turn the voids into a soft luminous field.
Why the system works
Brick carries warmth naturally, but the porous version adds rhythm.
Instead of reading as one continuous plane, the wall starts producing:
\- shadow depth;
\- changing transparency;
\- moments of compression and release;
\- a crafted feel that does not depend on expensive finishes.
That is the value. The construction stays simple, but the atmosphere gets richer.
Where it becomes useful in hospitality
A porous brick system can work well as:
- a bar front with tactile depth;
- a low partition that gives privacy without full separation;
- a warm backlit wall in a restaurant or lounge;
- a threshold element where structure itself becomes the feature.
In each case, the design is doing more than adding texture. It is shaping how people read the room.
What to protect in the detailing
The system feels good when the pattern is disciplined.
That means checking:
\- how often the void repeats;
\- how brick edges meet corners and returns;
\- whether the lighting is hidden cleanly;
\- how the wall behaves at eye level and touch level.
Otherwise the surface can slip from “crafted” into “unfinished.”
Thailand reality check
Brick is naturally suited to warm hospitality atmospheres in Thailand, but it still needs careful use. Dust, cleaning, humidity, and site tolerance all affect how refined the final result feels.
The wall does not need to be perfect. It does need to be intentional.
That is the difference between rustic laziness and crafted atmosphere.
