FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers on cost, timeline, the areas we cover, and how an interior design project with UNFORMALDESIGN actually works — for hospitality, F&B, retail, workspace and residential spaces in Thailand.

How much does an interior design project with UNFORMALDESIGN cost?

There is no fixed price list — a 40-seat café and a 200-room hotel are not the same project. We quote per project after an initial brief, based on scope (concept only, full design, or turnkey), floor area, and level of finish. As a guide, design fees are separate from the construction/fit-out budget; we give you an indicative range after the first call and a firm proposal once the scope is clear. To get a quote, send us your space, location, and what you want to achieve.

How long does a project take from start to opening?

It depends on scope and size, but a typical hospitality project runs in clear phases: concept design usually takes about 2–4 weeks, design development and documentation several weeks more, then fit-out/construction on site. A small café can move fast; a full hotel or multi-area venue takes longer. After we see your brief we give you a realistic phase-by-phase timeline, so you can plan around your target opening date.

Which areas and locations do you serve?

UNFORMALDESIGN is based in Bangkok and works across Thailand — including Bangkok, Phuket and Koh Samui — with projects delivered nationwide. Founder Alessio Carta is an Italian architect (MAA) with international experience across Europe, the USA and Asia, so we also take on projects beyond Thailand. Early phases (brief, concept, design development) can be handled remotely, with site visits scheduled around key milestones.

What is your design process, step by step?

Our process moves in five stages: (1) brief & discovery — we understand your concept, guests, budget and site; (2) concept design — the spatial idea, mood and material direction; (3) design development — layouts, details, materials and lighting resolved; (4) documentation — drawings and specs ready to build; (5) fit-out support or full turnkey delivery on site. It is a material-led, human-centered process: we shape raw energy into a space that has a real soul, not just commercial polish.

What services does UNFORMALDESIGN offer?

We offer interior design across hospitality, F&B, retail, workspace and residential spaces — from concept design only, to full design and documentation, to turnkey delivery. We are known for our material system approach: everyday industrial objects (pallets, PVC crates, oil barrels, glass bottles) re-imagined as modular, cost-effective architectural elements with real character.

Do you handle construction and fit-out, or only the design?

Both. You can engage us for design only, or for turnkey delivery — one vision from the first sketch to opening day. With turnkey, the design logic is protected through every handoff, so the atmosphere you approved is the atmosphere that actually gets built. Tell us which model suits your project and we scope it accordingly.

What makes UNFORMALDESIGN different from other interior design studios?

We design against “commercial perfection” — spaces built to connect, not just to impress. The approach is experimental and material-led: industrial, vibrant and human. Led by architect Alessio Carta, we turn raw street energy and re-used industrial materials into immersive, expressive spaces that fit a real budget. Design is not formal — it is unformal: raw, refined, alive, emotional.
